There a multitude of reasons and causes for back pain. Common causes are:
Injury
Muscle spasms
Disc problems
Compression of the nerves
Joint and Spine damage
Even bad posture can cause back ache
Back pain can be extremely painful and cause you to become less mobile, affecting many areas of your life.
The great news is that in many cases Osteopathy can alleviate your symptoms quickly and in a non-invasion manner.
Working all day bent over a computer, driving long distances, poor posture while standing or sitting, stress and tiredness are all factors that can cause the muscles in the neck and upper back to become tight and the joints to become stiff which can contribute to ongoing neck pain.
Sometimes a nerve in your neck can become irritated or “trapped” and cause pain in the arm going down into your shoulder or the hand, and may be accompanied by pins and needles and numbness.
Some headaches can be the result of tension or stiffness in the neck and upper back.
Arthritis or age-related wear and tear in the neck can also cause muscular pain from the neck into the shoulder as well as some stiffness in moving the neck.
As Osteopaths we can use a wide range of techniques to improve the muscular tension in your neck and improve movements in the joints of both your neck and upper back.
Common causes of joint pain are as follows (an Osteopath can help relieve the symptoms of these ailments):
Frozen shoulder
Tennis elbow
Wrsit pain
Hip pain
Knee strain
Foot and ankle pain
If your symptom isn't listed please get in touch because we still may be able to help.
The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis but there are many other types including ankylosing spondylitis, gout, psoriatic arthritis and reactive arthritis. Certain types of arthritis can also affect children.
Osteoarthritis is a result of wear and tear of the joints in the body. It is common in people over 50 and most commonly affects the joints of the knees, hips, neck and back, base of the toes and hands.
Treatment is individual, gently moving and stretching an arthritic joint and massaging surrounding muscles and tissues can help ease some of the discomfort.
We may work on general mobility of the other joints and muscles in the body to help the mechanics of the body work better.
However additional changes might be more understated, such as the results of hormonal softening of ligaments and the position of the developing baby.
A mix of the aforementioned can put further stress on your muscles and joints of both your spine and pelvis.
The philosophy of Osteopathy is that structure and function are interrelated and interdependent.

YES is the short answer! It is regulated under UK law. It is regulated in a similar way to that of the regulation for medical doctors.
Under the terms of the Osteopaths Act 1993, only people registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) can practice Osteopathy and call themselves Osteopaths.
By law, osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). The GOsC only accepts registration from practitioners who have a qualification in osteopathy that's recognised by the GOsC and who comply with their standards of practice.
